Alabama Insurance Exam

As a state-certified education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your Alabama insurance license.

Step 1: Complete an Alabama Pre-Licensing Insurance Course

To qualify for the Alabama insurance license exam you must successfully complete a pre-licensing insurance course that is certified by the Alabama Department of Insurance. Upon passing the pre-licensing course final exam you will be awarded a Certificate of Course Completion. Your certificate of completion is valid for a period of 12 months from the date of course completion.

Our Alabama pre-licensing insurance courses cover the various insurance concepts, definitions, insurance laws and agent regulations listed on the Alabama Examination Content Outline. Gatson Training Associates is certified by the Alabama Department of Insurance to offer the following courses:

Pre-licensing Course:

Property & Casualty – 40 hours

Step 2: Pass the Alabama Insurance License Exam

Upon successfully completing your pre-licensing insurance course, you must register with the University of Alabama to take your state insurance exam. Registration must occur at least 7 days in advance of the date in which you intend to sit for your state exam. Exam reservations can be made online at the University’s website or over the phone at (205) 348-3000.

These tests are nonrefundable and nontransferable. The registration fees are listed below:

About the Exam

  • You are required to provide a copy of your pre-licensing Certificate of Course Completion and a current form of identification with a photo (driver license, passport, etc.) at the testing center.
  • You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to take your exam and will forfeit your exam fee.
  • Applicants with disabilities should make special arrangements prior to registering for the state exam by contacting the testing administrator at (205) 348-3000
  • Passing score is 70%

Required Waiting Periods for Failed Exams

  • Fail 1st Attempt: No Waiting Period
  • Fail 2nd Attempt: 90 Days
  • Fail 3rd Attempt: No Waiting Period
  • Fail 4th Attempt: 180 Days
  • Fail Any Attempt After: 180 Days After Each Time

Step 3: Submit Electronic Fingerprints

After passing your state insurance exam, prior to applying for your insurance license, you must submit electronic fingerprints to complete a background check. Fingerprints are required by the Department of Insurance to ensure that applicants do not have a disqualifying criminal or social services background that would prevent them from being a licensed insurance agent.

Electronic Fingerprints Fee: $49.75

Important

Electronic fingerprints will remain active for only 30 days after they are submitted. You must pass your state exam and apply for your insurance license within this period or you will have to resubmit fingerprints and pay the required fee. The Alabama Department of Insurance will only accept fingerprints electronically processed through 3M Cogent.

Step 4: Apply for your License by completing an application

License qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • A resident of the state of Alabama
  • Complete the required pre-licensing course hours for the lines of authority for which you are applying
  • Pass the state insurance exam for the lines of authority for which you are applying
  • Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of license

Once you have passed your state insurance exam you can apply for your insurance agent license through the Vertafore website. Please keep in mind that you will only be able to electronically apply for your license once you have passed your state insurance exam and the testing vendor has reported your successful completion to the Department of Insurance.   1. Click ‘Apply for a license’ from the menu on the left
  2. Choose ‘Individual’ next to ‘Submit Resident Application’
  3. Enter your information at the top of the page, choose your state and continue
  4. Choose ‘Producer’ as your license type and continue
  5. Add which licenses you wish to apply for an continue
